KHULNA, NOV 18: Shaheed Hadis Park situated in front of Khulna City Corporation (KCC) under Sadar police station in the city is in the shabby state, perhaps for not paying proper attention by the KCC authority, is losing its attraction to the visitors for want of sufficient amusement facilities. Shaheed Hadis Park, the well-known recreation spot in the city, named after Shaheed Hadis Uddin, who was killed in mass upsurge of 1969, was earlier known as Municipal Park, Gandhi Park, Jinnah Park and Shaheed Park. Local residents’ and their families’ surroundings of the park earlier frequented to the park everyday. They spend time with their family to get relief from the monotonous daily routine life. KCC sources said to draw city dwellers therein for helping them to build their mental and physical growth in 1884, established the park on 1.3504 acres on land in front of Khulna City Corporation office. Benches were installed for visitors to sit on. Saplings of different wood, timber and medicinal trees and flower plants were planted in the park to make it appealing to nature lovers. The park has now two parts-the open space area and the garden area. The central Shaheed Minar of the city and independence was memorial, Durjoy-`71 are located in the open space of the park having some broken pond-view chairs and walkways. The garden portion has benches and an artificial mound built for a cost of approximately Tk 10 lakh. But the park now presents a dismal picture. The responsibility of taking care of this park is upon the city corporation authority. The metal bars of the grille surrounding the park are being stolen in absence of guards to check it. The concrete made footpath is worn-out. After a slight shower the low-lying areas of the park made muddy due to faulty drainage system. With dusk falling people of different ages would crowd the place to have a relief from the monotonous daily routine life. But gone are those glorious days of the past. The park hardly holds any joy for the people of the town. It has failed to draw the proper attention of the authority concerned. The park has become a den for miscreants, muggers and sex workers. They assemble here in broad daylight and tease the visitors, particularly the female visitors alleged some vendors. At times visitors are robbed of their belongings at the hands of thuggish elements. The KCC’s Assistant Engineer (planning) Abir-ul-Jabbar said over cell phone the developing project had already passed by the local government minister and hoped they would be able to start the work after allocation of fund by the Planning Commission. Besides, a new Shaheed Minar will be constructed inside the park replacing the old one, adjacent pond will be re-excavated and a fountain will be set up in the middle of the pond, he added.
