Accused include AL, Jubo League men

Parul Begum, wife of slain labour leader Modasser Hossain, filed a case with Daulatpur Police Station on Sunday evening, accusing eight people of killing her husband. The accused include Vice-President of Ward-1 unit of Awami League Kalam Sarder, Vice-President of the same ward unit of Jubo League Shahadat Mina and his two brothers Ahadat Mina and Raja Mina. Sub-Inspector (SI) Zahirul Alam of Daulatpur Police Station has been made Investigation Officer (IO) of the murder case. None of the accused was arrested as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Modasser Hossain, president of Maheshwarpasha Central Food Godown Handling Workers' Union, was gunned down on Thursday night near his house under Daulatpur Police Station in the city. Meanwhile, Awami League Khulna district and city units at a press conference here yesterday refuted allegation of the party's involvement in the murder of Modasser Hossain. Khulna City Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque read out a written statement at the press conference at Khulna Press Club at 12:00 noon. In a press briefing on Friday, Khulna City BNP President and lawmaker from Khulna-2 constituency Nazrul Islam Manju alleged that State Minister Begum Mannujan Sufian, also a lawmaker from Khulna-3 constituency, was one of the masterminds behind the murder of Modasser Hossain. Terming BNP lawmaker's allegation most irresponsible and unfounded, the city mayor said Khulna Awami league will give a befitting reply to Manju's dirty politics in the future. “We strongly demand arrest of the real culprits involved not only in the murder of Modasser Hossain but also in other murders committed in the past,” said Mayor Abdul Khaleque, also the president of AL Khulna city unit. He alleged BNP lawmaker Nazrul Islam Manju is patronising Janajuddho faction of outlawed Purbo Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) in the Southwestern region of the country. The press conference was attended, among others, by General Secretary of district AL Mostafa Rashidhi Suja, General Secretary of AL city unit Alhaj Mizanur Rahman, President of sadar thana unit Ajmal Ahmed Tapon and top leaders of Sramik League and Jubo league.
